History of the Berimbau Aurelio
The idea:
Berimbau Aurelio was originally developed in 1993 by Mestre Marcos and a LSC student named Benjamin Petersen. Benjamin was a professional instrument maker from South Africa and a dedicated student. The idea came about when Mestre Marcos noticed students struggling to prepare the original Berimbau and thought why not simplify it in the same way the guitar is tuned. He then approach his student with the idea and Benjamin responded, “give me 6 months to develop something”.
Creation:
After 6 months Benjamin came back with 7 Berimbau Aurelio's. At the time, he called it “The Uhadi” - the original African name for the Berimbau. Where are the original 7?
1 - Gifted to Mestre Sombra (Associação de Capoeira Senzala - Santos)
2 - Gifted to Mestre Beija-flor (Capoeira Paname - Paris)
3 - Gifted to Mestre Gege (Palma de Mallorca)
4 - Gifted to Museum of London
5 - Sold
6 & 7 - Stolen from the school
Now:
After 32 years, Mestre Marcos decided it was time to bring the Berimbau Aurelio back with the support of Mestre Silvia. Mestre Marcos has now hand made 4 - each one is unique. This means they may have very slight differences between them, but the sound and performance is consistent.
