London School of Capoeira Charity

The London School of Capoeira Charity was established in 1995 to promote Capoeira as a cultural instrument as well as an educational tool. The charity reaches out to communities and individuals, facilitating joyful learning experiences of one of the most popular and enriching elements of the cultural heritage of Brazil, Capoeira.

Capoeira is a Brazilian art form, incorporating diverse elements of African culture including dance, music, self-defence & acrobatics. Capoeira has travelled around the world, in the form of a game, thriving as an expression of life and resistance. It is an amazing art form with the capacity to truly inspire.

Benefits for Participants

Capoeira is an art form which fosters health, fitness, self-expression and personal development. It is a great activity for school groups and links to different academic subjects.
Our school clients have used LSC Capoeira to: promote the learning of Modern Foreign Languages (language of the art form is Portuguese), black history, healthy living, share carnival and Brazilian culture, expand the dance curriculum, invigorate school celebrations and as part of pupil enrichment programmes. LSC projects with families and children pass on direct skills, promote healthy living and the social and physical benefits of “joining in”.

Testimonials

Nicola Griffiths
Creative Agent – A New Direction

I recently worked with Marcos and Silvia on an enquiry school project for the Creative Partnerships programme. I was excited to work with them as I had experienced their training myself on their beginners course at LSC and had found their commitment to the art of Capoeira hugely inspiring.

I had the opportunity to visit one of the sessions in school and found that their shared knowledge and experience of over 20 years each provided an excellent platform for the students to participate on a variety of levels.

I would highly recommend working with the LSC on any project as their professionalism and enthusiasm for Capoeira and for project planning enabled a wonderfully smooth transition from an initial concept into a reality.

Thank you both for you hard work and continued commitment to both  Capoeira and education.

Holloway Secondary School, Islington, London.

Thank you very much for the performance and workshop you and Marcos presented yesterday at our school. It was impressive and was perfect for reinforcing what they have been studying in History.

I have had a lot of positive feedback from the students who attended. The History teacher will be using the materials we developed here as well as information on your website to create some folow up work with his classes in KS3 as part of the school’s Black History Month celebrations.

Head of Drama - Harris Boys, East Dulwich, London

Your practitioners were knowledgeable, approachable and were able to teach the boys quickly in order to make maximum use of the time. I am excited at the prospect of starting an extra- curricular Capoeira workshop at the earliest opportunity.

London School of Capoeira: Our mission is to promote wellbeing, health and a positive lifestyle through the practice and promotion of Capoeira.
